AI Work Timeline

Explore a possible path from 2026 to 2040. Move through the years, compare industries, and change the assumptions to see how the picture shifts.

A tool for asking better questions about AI and work. The future is uncertain; this chart makes its example assumptions visible.

ILLUSTRATIVE CHAPTER 2026–2028

Digital workflows

In this example, change starts with repeatable software and content tasks. Real adoption still depends on reliability, cost, skills and human review.

Adjust the scenario assumptions

These are the unverified example numbers supplied for this tool. Choose whole percentages from 0 to 100 and a timing year from 2026 to 2040. The end share must be at least the start share. Changes stay in this page and are not saved.

The timing year sets the curve’s inflection point. It is a shape parameter, not a predicted industry milestone or necessarily the halfway share.

How this chart works

A normalized logistic curve connects the selected 2026 and 2040 shares exactly. The curve timing year changes the pattern of acceleration between those endpoints. Each industry uses its own assumptions; no AI model is making a prediction here.

S(y) = 1 / (1 + exp(−12 × (y − t) / 14))

share(y) = a + (b − a) × [S(y) − S(2026)] / [S(2040) − S(2026)]

y is the selected year; a is the 2026 share; b is the 2040 share; and t is the curve timing year. The curve steepness is fixed at 12, and the horizon is fixed at 14 years. Displayed shares round to the nearest whole percentage.

The illustrative chapters follow fixed calendar ranges: digital workflows (2026–2028), knowledge work (2029–2032), logistics and operations (2033–2036), and physical and complex work (2037–2040). They do not depend on the edited curve timings.

Task exposure, practical adoption and changes in employment are different questions. This demonstration does not quantify those differences. Human contributions shown alongside the bars are prompts for thinking, not guarantees about future roles.

What research can tell us

The numbers in this explorer are editable examples supplied for this tool. They are not measured industry automation rates or validated predictions of job losses.

AI exposure describes tasks a model could affect. Adoption also depends on infrastructure, skills, costs, and organizational choices. Many occupations contain tasks requiring human input; the ILO describes job transformation as more likely than complete replacement. ILO: How might generative AI impact different occupations? (May 20, 2025) .

Digital and physical work differ. OECD research identifies greater generative AI exposure in programming and translating than in physical tasks such as cleaning or equipment operation. Broader robotics automation uses a different measure. OECD: Skills in the AI Age, Chapter 2 (July 8, 2026) .
