Write prompts that can be checked
Specify the task, useful context, constraints, and a result you can evaluate.
By SuperAIGuy.com · AI-assisted educational content · Updated
A useful prompt tells the assistant what to do, supplies relevant context, and describes the expected result. Clear instructions improve the starting point; they do not guarantee a correct answer.
Start with four ingredients
- Task: name the action, such as summarize, compare, explain, or draft.
- Context: supply the audience, relevant reference material, and necessary background.
- Constraints: state boundaries such as source use, length, or unavailable information.
- Output: ask for a useful structure and define how you will check it.
An example you can adapt
Summarize the provided report for a first-time reader. Give three findings and the report's limitations. Preserve dates and units. Cite the relevant sections. Mark information the report does not contain.
Improve through comparison
Try a small set of representative inputs. Check factual support and whether the answer followed your requirements. Change one part of the prompt, compare outputs, and keep the version that helps your task. A fluent answer alone is weak evidence of quality.
Explore the original prompt templates and replace their bracketed placeholders with your own context.
